5 good habits to adopt for improved eye health
10 October 2025

Good eye health is vital to ensure our safety when performing daily activities such as operating heavy machinery, driving, or playing sports. Nonetheless, we tend to overlook the importance of maintaining our eye health until it affects our vision. In fact, healthy eyes can minimise our risk of accidents or injuries that occur due to poor vision. To help prevent eye problems, a few simple habits can make a huge difference.

1. Wear sunglasses outdoors

Prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun can be among the most significant risks to eye health. UV rays can cause cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye problems. Fortunately, you can reduce this risk by wearing sunglasses with UV protection when you’re outside. It is highly recommended to look for sunglasses that can block out 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation.

2. Clean your contact lenses thoroughly

If you wear contact lenses, always ensure that they are properly cleaned and maintained to avoid eye infections. Eye infections may be caused by bacteria and other microorganisms that accumulate on the surface of contact lenses. Using a suitable solution recommended by your eye doctor can be an effective way to clean your contact lenses. Remember to also wash your hands when handling your contact lenses, in order to avoid transferring germs to your eyes. Most importantly, purchase authentic contact lenses from any reputable optical shops near you. The last thing you want is to suffer eye discomfort using unsuitable contact lenses.

3. Go for annual eye exams

Even if you are not experiencing any eye problems, going for regular eye exams is still necessary. It is advisable to undergo a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. During the eye exams, your eye doctor will check your vision and examine your eyes for any signs of eye diseases. On top of that, they may also detect other health problems that can affect your eyesight. These include but are not limited to high blood pressure and diabetes.

4. Try the 20-20-20 rule

Do you spend a lot of time looking at screens? Looking at screens often and for long periods may cause digital eye strain. Dry eyes, eye fatigue and headaches are some of the symptoms of eye strain. Practising the 20-20-20 rule helps to prevent this. According to the rule, you should look away from your screen every 20 minutes, and focus on something that is at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

5. Get glasses with blue light protection

In addition, the emission of blue light from electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets may increase your risk of eye strain. Blue light is a type of light that has a short wavelength and high energy, making it scatter more in the eye compared to other colours of light. This can lead to visual discomfort. With the help of blue light glasses, you can reduce the impact of blue light on your eyes. Choose a suitable pair from a wide range of blue light glasses available in Singapore. Blue light glasses have lenses that filter out blue light, reducing your eye strain problems. Cutting down your screen time or using blue light filters on your electronic devices may help as well.

All in all, taking care of your eyes is integral in ensuring good eye health and well-being. Start adopting good habits above today to improve your eye health.
