Guide to Prescription Sunglasses, Malaysia
07 July 2021

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Branded sunglasses are stylish accessories in Malaysia, and are often used to protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays as well as reduce glare from the sun. Whilst regular sunglasses help to protect the eyes, it does not provide clarity to those who wear prescription glasses. To avoid straining your eyes under the sun or squinting under your shades, prescription sunglasses are the ideal solution for you.

Read on for some of our best tips for choosing a suitable pair of prescription sunglasses so that you can have fun in the sun!

#1 Find out your prescription type

Just like prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses also have various types of lenses for different eye conditions. To make a pair of prescription sunglasses, the optician will have to find out the power needed to correct your vision by testing your eyes. This eye test is also used to identify other conditions like astigmatism or presbyopia. These are the types of lenses your optician may prescribe:

  • Single vision: Single vision lenses are the most common type of prescription. They can be optimised either for near- or far-sightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Progressive: Progressive lenses are for people suffering from presbyopia, which refers to the eye’s inability to shift between near and far distances. These use three types of lenses arranged from top to bottom, helping the wearer to focus on far, intermediate, and near distances.
  • Bifocals: Bifocals often use an upper and lower lens denoted by a line, allowing the wearer to see near and far.

Should you already have a recent prescription, the optician can also use it to make your prescription sunglasses. Your recent prescription can also let you enjoy greater convenience as you can simply place your order online without having to head down to the store.

#2 Always choose 100% UV protection

The first thing that you should look out for when purchasing a pair of sunglasses is the degree of protection that it provides against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Being exposed to excessive UV rays can cause short- or long-term problems like the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, also known as cataract.

Contrary to popular belief, wearing darker-tinted sunglasses does not necessarily provide a higher level of protection against UV light. Instead, you should look out for prescription sunglasses that have been labelled: 100% UV protection or 100% UV blocking. There are even a few types of prescription sunglasses that provide full UV protection without a coloured tint.

Optical shops in Malaysia like ours, offer branded prescription sunglasses that use lenses of superior quality and, thus, provide full UV protection. Still, it is advisable to always check with your optician before you make your purchase.

#3 Pick the right tint for your lifestyle

The colour and degree of the lens tint may not affect UV protection, but they do help to reduce glare or improve colour as well as contrast. Each different coloured-lens tint has a unique purpose, for instance, grey tints are ideal for showing colours that are closest to the original whilst reducing glare and brightness. This makes grey tints ideal for driving or playing outdoor sports.

Yellow or orange-tinted lenses are designed to increase contrast, and enhance colour in low-light conditions. Drivers might realise that yellow-tinted lenses do not disrupt vision when they’re travelling through a tunnel in Malaysia. Instead, they’re still able to see as clearly as in bright daylight.

On the other hand, amber or brown tints reduce glare and sharpen vision, especially against green or blue backgrounds. This also makes them a good choice for people who enjoy outdoor sports.

#4 Reduce glare with polarised lenses

Polarised lenses are an added luxury to prescription sunglasses, further reducing glare. Polarisation works by allowing light to filter through a vertical or certain angle, preventing the rays from entering directly. Furthermore, vertical filters also prevent light from bouncing off horizontal surfaces such as the ocean or the car hood and into your eyes, making polarised lenses the perfect option if you spend most of your time driving or playing outdoor and watersports.

Even though prescription sunglasses are more expensive, they are a worthwhile investment in the long run. These sunglasses protect the eyes against damaging UV light, ease eye strain, and increase comfort, all whilst ensuring that you see with utmost clarity. Consider buying branded sunglasses such as Rayban, Furla, or Police from reliable optical stores in Malaysia to enjoy both style and quality in sunny Malaysia![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
